Quite often, pregnant women get shocked to see blue or purple colored spider web like marks on their skin. Don’t get panic! It’s just the dilated blood vessels in your body, another effect of pregnancy.
Amongst the numerous changes occur to the body during pregnancy, the blood circulation plays an important role. Pregnancy and consequent hormonal action increase the blood flow. But the rate at which it gets back to the heart may be slower, which makes the blood vessels swollen and purple colored and more visible through the skin.
The spider veins are thus a part of your pregnancy. It usually appears on the legs. In some cases, spider veins also appear on face, neck, breast, and buttocks. Sometimes, the pregnant women also experience varicose vein. Spider vein will not get any other side effects, but varicose vein gradually causes pain.
Carrying twins or more increases your chance of spider veins. It can also hereditary. If you had spider veins in your previous pregnancy, then it can also be a risk factor. In general, spider veins disappear weeks after delivery.
How to manage Spider Veins:
- Eat Vitamin C Rich Food
Include dairy products or other food items that are rich in Vitamin C. It helps repair the damaged veins and prevent spider veins to an extent.
- Include more of fiber rich food
Sometimes, constipation also causes spider veins. Fiber rich food keeps your digestive system well.
- Keep your legs slightly upper than the body
When you lie down or sit, keep your leg up to ensure smooth flow of blood back to the heart. Try keeping a pillow down the legs when lying down.
- Work-out daily
A daily dose of exercise keeps your blood circulation efficient, and spider veins can be prevented.
- Avoid standing too long
Standing for too long may again affect the blood circulation back to the heart. Try moving around in case you go through a situation to stand for a little while.
- Try compression socks or support hose
It helps you deal with the blood circulation in a better way.
- Avoid tight clothes
Clothes those remain tight to your body restricting blood circulation, and it might pave the way for the spider veins. Try wearing loose clothes during pregnancy.
- Avoid sleeping on the back
It’s better advisable to sleep on to sides rather than sleeping on the back which results in the decreased venous return of blood to the heart.
