What actually causes these hard feet during pregnancy?
According to experts, the function of a hormone called relaxin can be a major reason for the hard and painful foot during pregnancy. Relaxin makes the ligaments soft and flexible in the pelvic region aiding labor and child birth. But indirectly it may affect tissues in other parts of the body including knee, ankle, and feet. This can be a reason for the pain of foot when the body weight increases.
At the same time, the extra weight of the body and its pressure on your foot may increase the thickness of skin around the ankle and foot. Hence, even though a good pedicure removes the hard skin, it tends to appear again till the end of the pregnancy.
How to deal with hard skin on feet?
Even though the hard skin can be removed temporarily, it again appears. So, treat your feet on a regular basis to avoid hard skin during pregnancy. You can also do a pedicure at home with the help of your partner.
Take a warm bath and use a pumice stone to rub away the hard skin. In your third trimester, it can be impossible to rub your feet yourself, so seek help from your partner or best friend.
You can also massage your feet for proper blood circulation. Right blood circulation softens the skin, and you will also feel better. Apply a moisturizer and keep the skin out of dryness.
If it is not possible to treat your feet at home, get an appointment for a pedicure session. Inform the salon staff earlier that you are pregnant and direct them to do the procedures with a little more care.
