Nausea and vomiting are quite common in pregnancy. Almost seven out of ten pregnant women experience morning sickness, which can actually appear any time a day. But it may get severe in some conditions. Expectant mothers may vomit too much during the first trimester in some cases. A Severe condition of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is called Hyperemesis Gravidarum.
During pregnancy, some smell, stress or hormonal action can trigger this vomiting. If it goes beyond a limit, vomiting may cause dehydration and weight loss which also affects the baby. In addition, severe vomiting results in increased heart rate and low blood pressure. So, in a case of severe vomiting, it should be dealt seriously.
Here are some home remedies for vomiting:
- Drink lots of water
Instead of just having two cups of water at a time like after or before lunch, try drinking water frequently. It may help you reduce the vomiting or vomiting tendencies. Drinking a cup of water in every one hour found to be effective in reducing morning sickness. It also helps you get hydrated despite the vomiting.
- Try ginger
Drinking ginger tea or chewing a ginger candy may help you relieve the severe vomiting. Ginger is found to be effective in dealing with digestive issues. It helps you in decreasing the acidic secretion and relieve the stress.
- Use lemon
Lemon is used to reduce vomiting tendencies despite pregnancy. It possesses a natural soothing effect, and even the smell of it may reduce the vomiting tendencies.
- Vitamin supplements
Sometimes, deficiency of vitamins like Vit B6 can be the reason for intense vomiting. Taking required vitamin supplements helps you deal with it. For the exact quantity and frequency of the medicine, the pregnant woman should consult with her gynecologist or midwife.
- Try ice-creams
Having a little of ice creams in the morning helps you.
If the problem of vomiting gets out of control and the pregnant woman experience dehydration, it may be treated with intravenous fluids. The woman may get admitted to the hospital for the fluid intake as dehydration can be life-threatening to both the mother and baby.
There are medications too available to control the severe vomiting that may harm the health of the mother and baby. It should be taken after consulting with the doctor. In case of the inability to have food properly, if the pregnant woman suffers lack of nutrients through diet, total parenteral nutrition can be given. It is the procedure of supplying nutrients through IV fluids to the body. It helps the mother and baby remain healthy despite the severity of vomiting.
