Labor is the process through which childbirth happens, and the pain is felt when the muscles of the uterus contract. Labor pain can vary from woman to woman. Based on the pregnancy, characteristics of the body, hormonal actions and many other silly and serious factors, the intensity of the pain vary.
For some women, the pain can be similar to menstrual cramps but for some, it can be so severe that she may feel like taking the life out of her. Some say that for each pregnancy the labor pain and duration gets decreased, though no scientific proof available to substantiate.
Anyway, some simple steps can help you cope up with the labor pain. Here are some tips:
- Understand about the labor
Make yourself aware of the stages of labor through a prenatal class and clear your doubts.
- Rhythmic breathing
You can try rhythmic breathing to avoid focusing on the pain. Take immense air while you inhale and exhale completely. The rhythm helps you relax.
- Try different position
Try to stand or sit in different positions in a way to feel less about the pain or feel relaxed.
- Walking or move around
This technique has been found to be easing and speeding up the labor. Many women feel it better when they keep walking during labor.
- Get a massage
You can get help from you partner or mother or midwife to massage. It helps you feel better during the contractions. A husband assisted approach to birth is called as Bradley method.
- You can also try Yoga or meditation
Trying some light yoga techniques speeds up the labor and paves the way for child birth. Meditation helps you keep calm.
- Take a warm shower
Bathing also helps you feel comfortable and may ease the pain.
- Get necessary medications
In case the pain progresses longer and become intolerable, you can also try medications.

It can reduce pain, but will not have total numbness. It can be injected through a shot or IV drips. It can cause drowsiness and nausea in the mother.
2. Regional Anesthetics
It can be given for a painless delivery. It is effective in a way not to feel the pain in the area of injection. During labor, it can be injected in the lower back.
The pregnant woman no more feels the pain.
1. Epidurals are local anesthetics that ease delivery without pain.
2. Spinal: While the local epidural takes some time to be active, spinal block comes effective. It is injected directly into the spinal fluid and will be effective for one to two hours.
3. Combined spinal epidural block: It is again a combination of the spinal block with the effect of an epidural. While having an epidural block, the movement is restricted. But in this case, as it is a single dose injection, you are free to move.
4. Pudendal block: It is local anesthetics injection which blocks the pain between vagina and anus. It is usually administered just before the baby comes out so that the pressure on the rectum will not cause much pain for the mother.
They are medications used for easing the anxieties of the mother. It is rarely used.
If a pregnant woman on labor goes through intolerable pain, in case epidural is not chosen, opioids can be administered. You feel like sleepy as it is injected through IV drips. The pain will still be there, but the sleepiness won’t make you feel as it is.
