There are incidents in which siblings or partners kept the dead body of a family member inside the house for days thinking the dead may come back some day. In a recent event in Kerala, the Southern State of India, a family kept the dead man’s body inside the house for three months.
Dr. Jinesh P. S, Co-founder of Infoclinic shared his feelings after knowing about the incident at Kerala. He said that such incidents happen due to the lack of awareness.

- Expansion of Pupil
Pupil of the eyes gets expanded soon after the death.
- Suspended Animation or Apparent Death
- Algor Mortis
It is the change in body temperature that gradually equals to the atmospheric temperature of the locality and has been considered as the second stage of death.
- Postmortem Caloricity
In certain cases, the body temperature tends to rise even after the death happens. Mostly in deaths from sunstroke, infectious diseases such body temperature rise can be seen.
- Postmortem Staining
Due to gravitational pull, the blood starts flowing downwards, away from the heart after death. And the skin starts to change color with the absence of blood flow in the blood vessels.
- Primary Flaccidity
Soon after the death, the muscles losses its rigidity and become fatigue. The lower jaw falls, and the joints become flexible.
- Rigor Mortis
After death, the muscles and joints would start stiffening. It usually starts after one hour of death and can continue till four days.
- Cadaveric Spasm
It happens in death due to violence. Some muscles or group of muscle remain stiff after death. When a person commits suicide with a gun, it may remain stiff in their hand even after death.
- Gas formation
Gradually the carbohydrate, fat, and muscles start decomposing in the body. Hydrogen Sulphide, Methane, Sulphur Dioxide, Ammonia, etc. would form in the body in the gas state, especially inside the intestine.
- Body gets swollen
Within 24-36 hours of death, the body gets swollen while tongue and eyes get projected from its position, due to the gas formation.
- Hair gets moved
After 72 hours, hair stops growing and starts falling off from the body.
- Visible color changes
As the body continues after 72 hours of death, color changes begin. The first color change appears on the right side of lower abdomen.
The condition of green coloring of the body is called Marbling. It starts after 36 hours of death.
- Process of decaying
Within 12 hours of death, the larynx, trachea, and aorta become pinkish red. The spleen becomes semi-liquid while the lungs shrink to a black mass. It takes a long time to decompose Prostate gland in men and Uterus in women.
It is based on the above parameters that the forensic surgeons conduct the autopsy of the body to get clues about the reason for deaths.
