It is a known fact that an appointment with a dental specialist is a fearful one for most of the children. While it may get reduced after the first visit, many still feel reluctant to have a dental check-up for many reasons.
Fear for dental consultation and anxiety has been considered as serious public health dilemma across the world. A recent study conducted by a group of professional at Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Meenakshi Ammal Dental College, Chennai, the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India, reveals that children usually prefer rhymes, toys and cartoon walls.
The study analyzed the response of a set of fifty children between the age of 6 and 10 years. A questionnaire to collect data on selected ten aspects to dental anxiety and dental consultation was distributed, and the statistics were analyzed.
As per the research, about 96 percent of children preferred listening music of which 64.4 percent voted for rhymes. About 94 percent children like to have a scented clinic for dental procedures while 82 percent favored toys. About 76 percent of children preferred cartoon painted walls in dental clinics, and 68 percent wanted the presence of parents during procedures.
The research also revealed that a majority of participants preferred treatment by the doctor of the same gender to that of the child.
According to researches, the fear to get dental treatment in children can be due to various reasons. It can be:
- Fear of pain
- Fear of unknown or about what is going to happen during treatment
Through frequent visits and building a relationship with the dentist, anxieties and fears can be eliminated. The support and care from parents will help deal with such situations. Instead of taking directly to a dentist, explain the reasons to visit a dentist, its importance and how it will be in a positive way. If the children have any doubts, let them clear it with the dentist or give proper explanations for their questions than ignoring it.
