Almost all parents of a teenager these days worry about the time spent on video games by their children. The Internet has grown to that extent to control the lives of many, though it happens unknowingly.
We have heard about addictions. Drug addiction is the leading one among it. Now here comes another, video game addiction, which is scientifically called as ‘Internet Gaming Disorder.’
Considering the importance and behavior of the issue, American Psychiatric Association had included ‘Internet Gaming Disorder’ in its latest guidelines Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM5). Urging more researches on the topic, the association asks a united effort to study the disorder in order to decide whether to include it in the formal list of mental disorders.
As per researches, India has been ranked 22nd in internet-gaming generated revenue, across the world. The worldwide prevalence of the disease stands between 0.2 percent to 8.5 percent. In addition, the disease is more prevalent in males than females and adolescents are prone to this disorder.
A research on classification criteria for internet gaming, published in 2015, reported that Internet gamers were found to be highly associated with anger, guilt, and depression when compared to a controlled group. In another study, it has been substantiated that sleep deprivation was a major issue among the addicts.
Other behavioral issues:
- Agitated mind
- More irritability
- Confusion over real world and gaming world
- Low social participation
- Violent behavior
Experts suggest that the parents should always check the content of video games that their children play. Make sure that instructions laid out by the gaming product company have been followed to avoid risks. If they have recommended the game only for people above a certain age, stick to such rules.
The recent news about some psycho-games which asked the kids to suicide at the end of the game has been sensational. Though it was a different case, such incidents happen because of a variety of reasons like lack of support from family.
If diagnosed with such addiction in teenagers or youngsters, the psychiatrists usually suggest a set of therapies based on individuals mental problems. It can be motivational interviewing, counseling or medication.
