Boston Scientific in association with Visible Health, a medical app maker, has developed a new app, called the Ureteral Stent Tracker, that helps clinicians keep tabs on ureteral stents implanted in individuals with kidney stones.
A ureteral stent is a tiny tube inserted into the ureter to treat obstruction of the urine flow from the kidney. Experts with Boston Scientific say that 13 out of 100 ureteral stents will be forgotten, and are left in the patient for more than six months. This leads an increased risk of infection.
The Ureteral Stent Tracker is available as an app or via a web portal. The technology helps urologists to record details related to a ureteral stent implantation and set automated reminders. The doctors can also scan the barcode of Boston Scientific stent to quickly upload details about the device.
