Will Smith has revealed his parenting style in an interview on BBC Radio 1Xtra. On the chat show, he was asked if he consciously permits his children “a lot of freedom of expression.”
“Yeah, I think it may have been a mistake,” the actor joked with a hearty laugh. “I think we may have gone too far.”
The Concussion star said that Jaden is 100% fearless.
“Jaden is 100% fearless, he will do anything. So as a parent it’s scary, it’s really terrifying – but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions, and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”
Jaden made his acting debut in the film The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) as Christopher, the son of Chris Gardner, Will Smith’s character
Jaden, 17-year-old, recently named the new face of Louis Vuitton (a French fashion house) womenswear.
“[Jaden] represents a generation that has assimilated the codes of true freedom, one that is free of manifestos and questions about gender… [he] conveys something very interesting about the integration of a global wardrobe. He’s found an instinctive balance that makes his extraordinary attitude a new norm,” said Nicolas Ghesquiere, who enlisted Jaden to star in the brand’s advertising campaign.
Will Smith wants to give his 15-year-old daughter the same amount of freedom as her two brothers. But he is struggling with the plan.
“When Jaden goes out, he’s usually in a group of “6 or 7 dudes, so they have a small army when they go out, so their freedom is slightly different from Willow’s. Willow’s a 15-year-old girl. We try to have the same rules, but it’s a different world, so we’ve been struggling with that,” he explained.
The starlet can stay out until 11:00 or 11:30 on Fridays and Saturdays, but like most teens, “She keeps calling and adding 15 minutes.”
